The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) Electronic Permit System (e-Permit System) main menu is the primary portal to a number of online permit and inspection tasks. By clicking into one the circles at the left of the listed options and then pressing the Next button you can navigate to the following areas:

O Obtain one or more Express Permits (on-line registration required).

Choose this option to obtain one or multiple Express Permits. Click here for a complete list of Express Permits. You are required be a registered e-Permit user and have a valid credit (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) card before proceeding. You may register as a property owner or contractor by clicking on this New User Registration link and providing personal information, a user ID and a password. As a property owner you are restricted to obtaining Mechanical and Electrical Express Permits for single-family dwelling that you occupy. To register as a contractor you will need to add information about your company, contractor’s license, business tax registration certificate, and worker’s compensation coverage.

O Request an inspection (for any permit).

Choose this option to request an inspection for any permit with the exception of Fire Sprinkler, Elevator, and Pressure Vessel permits. You will need to know the permit number, site address, date and type of inspection needed, and the name and phone number of a contact person to receive a confirmation call the morning of the inspection. Requests made before 3:00 p.m. can be processed for the next business day. Every effort will be made to perform your inspection on the date requested, however, your inspector will make the final determination. You may verify your inspection request or obtain answers to code-related questions by calling the inspector using the number provided on the Inspection Request Confirmation page.

O Check the status of an existing e-Permit.

Choose this option to view the status of any e-Permit you have previously obtained. You will need the e-Permit Reference Number or the e-Permit Group Number to view any information. Providing the reference number will allow you to view the status and permit number of an individual e-Permit. Providing the group number will allow you to view the status, payment submittal and processing dates, and permit numbers for the e-Permit payment group.

O Calculate the fees for an express permit

Choose this option to obtain fee information without actually applying for an e-Permit. This information may be valuable when you are planning your project or while preparing an estimate.

O Update registration information.

Choose this option to provide new information to your already existing registration. Occasionally, new requirements for permit issuance are required by legislation and you will be asked to update your information.
